Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889 ) was a Japanese artist active during the late Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period. He had established his own painting method while learning from various schools such as ukiyo- e and Kano school. Kyosai is known as a talented painter who left many types of artworks, including
Buddhist paintings, drawings of beautiful women, bird-and-flower paintings and caricatures. In 1881, the British architect Josiah Conder become an apprentice of Kyosai.
Kyosai was intimate with Haibara�� s third-generation owner Naojiro. Accoring to "Kyosai�� s Picture Diary", he had visited the store frequently and enjoyed talking with the owner. Haibara�� s library preserves various artworks by Kyosai and his daughter, Kyosui, which represent a long-term interaction with Kawanabe Family.
